A city in Uttar Pradesh, northern India, that has been distilling the essence of flowers, woods, and resins for over 400 years. The techniques are unchanged since the Mughal period. The equipment is unchanged. The knowledge is passed from father to son, generation to generation.
Kannauj is where attar — pure natural perfume distilled into sandalwood oil — was born. It remains the most authentic source of natural botanical essences in the world.
The Method
The deg is a copper vessel. The bhapka is the receiver. Between them, over a wood fire, the raw botanical material is gently hydro-distilled — never steam-distilled — into a base of pure sandalwood oil.
The process takes hours. Sometimes days. The artisan monitors the fire by instinct, the hydrosol by feel, the yield by experience. There is no automation. No shortcut. The resulting attar carries the full, living character of the plant — not a fraction of it.

The Process
Flowers, resins, and woods are harvested at the peak of their aromatic intensity — often at dawn, by hand, in specific seasons.
The botanical material is loaded into the copper deg vessel with water. Gentle heat — wood fire, not steam — coaxes out the essence.
The aromatic vapour rises, condenses, and is received into the bhapka — which contains a base of pure sandalwood or carrier oil.
The attar rests. Some for days. Some for years. The aromatic molecules settle, integrate, and deepen. Time is the final ingredient.

I wanted to find where it all began. Before the department stores. Before the glass bottles and the advertising campaigns. Before fragrance became a product.
I found Kannauj. A city in northern India that has been distilling the essence of flowers, woods, and resins for over 400 years. Master artisans working over open wood fires, by hand, using copper pots unchanged since the 16th century. No machines. No shortcuts. Just patience, skill, and an ancient tradition that most of the world has forgotten.
Daar Al Oud was not planned. It was the natural consequence of obsession — of someone who could not stop searching, could not accept the synthetic substitute, and eventually went directly to the source.
This is not fragrance for everyone. It was never meant to be.
